The biggest among the beetles in Nebraska is the American burying beetle, found in open woodlands, forest edges, and scrublands. Another big beetle, the Japanese beetle mainly inhabiting eastern Nebraska, is active from June through September. Of the smaller beetles, the cigarette and foreign grain beetles are house pests infesting food products and several other things like leather, silk, etc.
The world’s rarest insect and presently endangered salt creek tiger beetle is endemic to Nebraska’s Lancaster County.
