Quick Facts

Other names Ladybugs, ladybirds, lady beetles
Lifespan 1 year
Distribution Worldwide
Habitat Cities, forests, grasslands, suburbs, etc
Predators Primarily birds, but also dragonflies, flies, spiders, and parasitoid wasps
Seasons active Spring to fall
Host Plants Blue cohosh, thistle, geraniums, etc
Diet of adults Aphids, fruit flies, mites, and other insects

Identifying the Damage Caused by Them

They are not harmful and bite humans only when their primary food sources run out, and they search for new ones.

The only exceptions to this are those of the subfamily Epilachninae, which can attack the leaves of plants like beans, grains, potatoes, etc.

Did You Know

  • Ladybirds are beneficial as they feed on pests like aphids and scale insects.
